Author of the unforgettable Kirikou trilogy , Michel Ocelot ‘s Azur et Asmar (2006) is a new animated masterpiece that has marked an entire generation. Inspired by the Tales of a Thousand and One Nights, Azur et Asmar tackles social issues such as social inequality and the discovery of foreign cultures through the story of two milk brothers – Azur the blond-haired, blue-eyed boy and Asmar the dark-haired, black-eyed boy – raised by the same woman in a green, flower-filled land. Abruptly separated by life at the end of childhood, they are both driven by the desire to find the Djinn Fairy, and embark on a richly instructive epic that will reunite the two brothers.
Gabriel Yared’s original score, specially rearranged by Robin Melchior for this format, will be performed by the Yellow Socks Orchestra, accompanied by Mohamed Najem on the Ney flute and Yousef Zayed on the Oud, in perfect synchronization with the film’s widescreen projection. It’s an opportunity for the whole family to rediscover this touching tale of adventure for young and old alike.
Film synopsis
Once upon a time, there was Azur, a blond-haired, blue-eyed son of the squire, and Asmar, a dark-haired, black-eyed son of the nurse who raised them as brothers in a green, flowery land. Life suddenly separates them.
But Azur never forgets his childhood companions or the fairy tales of his nurse across the sea. Now grown up, he returns to the land of his dreams, in search of the Djinn Fairy. There he meets up with Asmar, also determined to find and win the fairy, braving all the dangers and spells of a world of wonders.
